Antral follicle count (AFC) is a fertility assessment tool used in reproductive medicine to evaluate ovarian reserve, which refers to the quantity and quality of a woman's remaining eggs. During a transvaginal ultrasound, the number of small follicles (measuring 2-10mm in diameter) present in both ovaries is counted. These follicles, known as antral follicles, represent a pool of potential eggs for ovulation in the current menstrual cycle. AFC is typically performed on days 2-5 of the menstrual cycle and provides valuable information about a woman's ovarian reserve and potential response to fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or ovarian stimulation. It helps healthcare providers assess fertility status and tailor treatment plans accordingly.
